Safe Prescribing of Opioids: Zero Unintentional Deaths

This activity has been planned in accordance with the need to educate
health care professionals on strategies for improving assessment,
treatment, and management of individuals with chronic pain to minimize
unintentional prescription opioid overdose.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for health care professionals who treat
people with pain.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

*  Describe the prevalence and demographics of overdose deaths from
prescription opioids in the United States, together with the
major risk factors for unintentional overdose deaths
*  Employ “Six practices for safe opioid prescribing”
while treating chronic pain to minimize the risk of overdose
deaths from prescription opioids
*  Identify tools to help integrate these practices into their care
of people with pain
*  Integrate “Clinical Guidelines on Prescribing Opioids for
Treatment of Pain” into their practice
