Dear APF Member,

As you may know, fibromyalgia is the most common chronic widespread
pain condition in the United States, affecting more than 6 million
Americans about one in every 50 adults.  Despite its prevalence
and increased awareness of the condition, finding a healthcare
professional skilled in diagnosing and managing fibromyalgia can be
challenging.

To recognize healthcare professionals who have made it their mission
to understand fibromyalgia and support those with the condition, the
National Fibromyalgia Association and American Pain Foundation have
teamed up to recognize them through the “Helping Hands: Making a
Difference in Fibromyalgia” Awards program just launched today!

Fibromyalgia is an underserved and therefore undertreated pain
condition, especially when compared to other chronic pain conditions
including arthritis. This is a disorder which presents with a diverse
set of symptoms.  Many health care professionals have had limited
tools and education on how to diagnosis and treat people living with
this condition. The Helping Hands Awards Program is a way to recognize
healthcare professionals who have shown exceptional support to their
patients and devoted time to becoming skilled in managing this
complex, central nervous system disorder.

The call for nominations is now open!  Do you think your
healthcare professional possesses unique qualities and provides
exceptional fibromyalgia care?  If so, nominate him/her today!

Here are a few examples of things to look for in an exceptional
fibromyalgia healthcare professional; a provider that makes a
difference:

*  They are informed about fibromyalgia and know how to communicate
that information to you.
*  They serve as a true partner in your fibromyalgia care and will
develop a customized management plan that works for your
lifestyle.
*  They are compassionate and provide support to you, not only on a
one-on-one basis but on a broader scale by working with your
family and healthcare team to educate them on your condition.

If you believe that your healthcare provider makes a difference in
your life, please click here to read more and submit a nomination
form no later than November 17, 2008.

Remember, healthcare professionals include anyone involved in your
ongoing care, such as nurses, physical therapists, social workers,
physician assistants and physicians. The “Helping Hands:
Making a Difference in Fibromyalgia” Awards will be given out
this December, 2008.
