In 1990, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and experienced paralysis in my lower extremities. My neurologist told me that I would probably never walk again and I was released four months later from the rehabilitation hospital in a wheelchair. I was 28 years old and my two daughters were three and four.
My painful spasms traveled all the way from my head to the end of my toes at any given moment. Initially, it caused me to cry out, jump up or scream. With time, I began to take deeper breaths and almost like clockwork, I knew when the next pain episode would consume my body.
I tried different techniques, medication, prayer, telling myself that it wasn’t that bad after all or pretending that the spasm was my body giving me a big squeeze or hug!
My lowest point was wanting to end my life. That was also when I renewed my faith in God and began to choose “Love” as my focal point for living.
My journey living with MS almost ended my life. Instead, it redefined my meaning of love, faith and miracles.
My suggestions for finding PEACE…
Proactive approach to living the life you deserve! Keep learning and asking questions. Share what works for you to reduce or diminish pain.
Engagement with others; those you care about, those that care about you and especially nourish friendships in dialogues that are meaningful. Choose healing words that lead to more beautiful experiences.
Accept who you are right now! Yes at this very moment! Love with all your heart and feel your body, Spirit and Mind begin to attract positivity and ignite energy that leads to more smiles that are contagious. Let go of the “bolsa de coraje” (bag of anger) and replace it with the“bolsa de amor” that is felt around you, inside you and travels with you wherever you go.
Calm down! Take a deep breath; process your thoughts, feelings and range of emotions. Yes, its okay to scream and let go of painful memories or pain that is evident right at this moment. Despite the hurt that can be harmful even in the darkest moment, you can find hope. Believe and it will be.
Envision tranquility and find ways to create a space for you where you feel balance. You will know where that is because your heart will relax, your senses will become excited and you will feel safe.
